"Out of my Mind with Lee Elci"

Well the end of the summer is officially upon us and I must say these last 5 months have flown by. As I get older it feels like time actually is moving quicker. A very wise man once told me that a person’s perspective on time actually changes as a person ages, and in fact time does indeed speed up as we get older.

You don't believe me? Ok, I can prove it. When you were one day old your entire life was encapsulated in a small 24-hour period. However that same 24 hours, which is the blink of an eye for any middle-aged man, will still represent the entire life of a newborn baby. As each day passes and you get older, that same 24 hours represents a smaller slice of your life. Therefore when you are 40 years old you have lived 14,600 days. That same 24 hours which once represented 100% of your life now represents only .00006849% of your existence. Pretty wild right? Still not convinced? Ok, think about it as the dotted white lines on the highway. When you were one day old it took a whole day to go the distance of one dotted painted line. In that same timeframe now you would pass 14,600 dotted white lines. Clearly as you get older each day moves a little bit faster!!

One other thing that has been on my mind lately has been fate. Simple little changes in your everyday life can drastically alter who and what you are. Maybe I am throwing to much Philosophy out there today. We can tackle Fate next time.

"Out of my Mind"

I will always root for the animal. Man vs Lion, I cheer on the lion; Man vs Bear, I am pulling for the bear; I even get the pom poms out and pray that the gun misfires on those silly hunting shows and hope some angry deer is able to turn the tables and do some good ol’ fashioned stompin’. I'm sorry, that’s just the way I feel. I am certainly a sucker when it comes to a good story about a dog or a cat, but I even root for the bull or the Elephant whenever the dopey humans get out of line.

If you missed this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWAIjYs9Lws how can you not feel compassion for this bull? He is simply trying to survive/escape and the humans get in the way. It has been said by wiser people than I that any civilization can be graded by the way they treat their animals. I would say that in general we would be getting a D minus. Entirely too many dogs and cats are being euthanized for convenience sake. All too many stories in the local newspaper about animal cruelty. Watch this video and tell me that a dog does not have a soul http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HJTG6RRN4E  Can’t do it can you?? I did not mean to get on the soapbox today and talk about this, it just kind of came out. It’s 2010 and still we have bullfighting, Elephant poaching, Dog fighting, seal massacres and whale killing? Come on people, we are better than this. He is one last video I want you to watch. Try not to cry. Have a great day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4OD8dxIry8

"Out of my Mind with Lee Elci"

Let’s say its Election Day. And let’s say you are the most right wing, right leaning Republican in America. You drive a Hummer, you own a bunch of firearms, you eat steak for breakfast lunch and dinner, and there is not a day that has gone by since 1995 that you haven't used at least one Rush Limbaugh quote at the water cooler. Now lets say you just found out that the Democratic candidate running in your state was simply a better choice than the Republican. Better on the economy, stronger on defense, tougher on immigration. Who would you vote for? Would you pull the lever with the (R) next to the name simply because he/she was a Republican, or would your cross the line and vote for the Donkey?

This is the argument I recently had with a number of callers on my radio show. Now I am an Independent, so for me the answer is easy. However the majority of my listeners on WXLM are strong-minded Republicans and were divided in their answers. Most used the excuse that no Democrat could possibly be a better all around candidate than a Republican. I understand that stance, however I want to explore the hypothetical. Now mind you this experiment can work in reverse as well. There are probably just as many, if not more, tunnel visioned Democrats in the USA than their GOP counterparts.

So the question I ask all of you is, what would you do? Do you stand firm with unwavering steadfast party allegiance? Or do you take a leap of faith? To me the clear and only answer is to vote for the best candidate no matter what the party affiliation. I understand there is a deep fear and distrust along party lines. I see it and hear about it every day. There is no question that I personally lean a certain way. I just think that my personal core values are more in tune with the pachyderm than the Equus Africanus Asinus.
